In 2004, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines were heavily engaged in urban operations during the intense fighting in Ramadi, Iraq—one of the most dangerous and volatile cities in the Al Anbar Province. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, 1/5 operated with speed and precision, moving through the dense urban sprawl under constant threat from insurgent ambushes, IEDs, and sniper fire. Their mission was to stabilize the region, support the establishment of local governance, and disrupt enemy strongholds. The Marines' relentless presence and combat effectiveness in Ramadi during that year marked a critical effort in counterinsurgency operations in one of the war's most contested zones.
